This page is for basic information about grow-outs.
If you are interested in commissioning me to grow out a seed crop for you or your company, I am happy to do this – please contact me for details.
2025 Grow-outs – Rules/Informationals:
– I generally grow small to moderate quantities of seed. I am most open to considering grow-outs for less than/up to 50 lbs. of corn seed, less than/up to 10 lbs. of bean seed, and varying lesser quantities of other species.
– My favorite crops to save seed from include corn, beans, squash, sunflowers, peas, cowpeas and yardlongs, tomatoes, cucumbers, and watermelons, but I am open to consideration of all species suitable for warm temperate climates.
– I can grow out my own varieties or yours. There is no charge for me to accept your clean, disease-free seedstock for planting (you will just have to cover shipping to get it to me). If you want to use my seedstock for the grow-out, a charge will be assessed to you that is equal to the retail value of the seedstock.
– Whether a variety of mine is eligible for you to request for grow-out may be conditional. Most commercially-available varieties are freely eligible, but certain rare/sacred varieties may not be.
– A per-ounce or per-pound fee will be assessed for any cleaned, finished seed delivered to you at the end of the season. Price per pound varies based on species and variety. Please inquire about current rates for your crop of interest.
– My packaging is generally into plain, unmarked bags or boxes. If you require special packaging or separation into individual packets, I can accommodate, but you must then provide the special packaging to me, or cover any additional costs for me to obtain it.
– Shipping is additional, on top of any value paid for the seed. You will be responsible for the cost of returning the seed to you. I do not charge for packaging in most cases, only the actual cost of shipping. You may also arrange to pickup locally, which has no added charge.
– I cannot guarantee yield. If you commission me for a certain amount, I will try my best to come as close to it as I can. However, this may be affected by many factors, such as the innate capabilities of the variety itself, the amount of seedstock I have available or that you made available to me, inclement weather, drought, pest pressures, diseases, etc.
– In the unlikely event that a crop is a total failure due to something such as (but not limited to) an “act of God”, extreme weather event i.e. derecho, tornado, summer freeze etc., an extreme disease outbreak or extreme disease susceptibility, or so forth, you will not owe me anything further than the initial seedstock fees you may have paid for the seed I put in the ground. However, I am also not responsible for these types of crop failures, and you agree that I do not I owe any form of additional compensation to you in the event of said failures.
– I keep a small amount (one large packet worth) from each grow-out for myself. This is simply to refresh, add to, or backup my own seed supplies. If you do not approve me to do this or wish to maintain control over every seed produced, that can certainly be arranged, but you must specifically request it, otherwise this is my default policy.
